To beat your snack cravings, be a stickler
Written by Rachel Berman
My friends know they can always rely on me for a stick of gum. I have at least one pack in my bag at all times. Research has shown that chewing gum can help suppress your appetite and prevent you from reaching for another serving of food or a snack. And it’s not just dietitians who keep a pack up their sleeves, so to speak. Trainers are getting in on it, too. In fact, it’s one of The Biggest Loser trainer Bob Harper’s favorite tricks.
Harper has taken it one step further: He’s teamed up with Extra Gum — my favorite kind since the flavor seems to last forever — to create the “3 p.m. Snackdown Challenge.” Why 3 p.m.? Turns out, that’s the time most Americans tend to make unhealthy snack choices. In fact, their survey found that 71% of women don’t even feel hungry at that time; they just eat “because it’s there.” If “it” happens to be chips from the vending machine, cookies, or your coworker’s birthday cake, that could be very bad news, indeed. Pop a stick of sugar-free gum instead — just 5 calories — to keep you from mindless snacking.
And how about a little “Extra” incentive? Extra and Bob Harper are offering some great prizes to help you lead healthier lives, including personal training sessions with the man himself. Check out their sweepstakes at extra3pmsnackdown.com.
Skinny Bonus: We have a great prize, too! Tell us the most challenging “snack attack” you battle and how you’ve learned to stay away from this trigger food. Our favorite response (please keep them short and sweet) will win a 2-year supply of Extra sugar-free gum. Send your responses to contests@skinnyandthecity.com by 5 p.m. EST Wednesday, April 8.
I also keep sugar-free chocolate in the freezer and only take out a piece or two at a time. Best way to control my consumption!
how i tackle them? : keep drinking water and think of all the germs crawling on my candy treat inside the confines of that drawer! :) That thought surely keeps me away from them..until i decide to share them at lunch(read..give them away to all colleagues)
