Go ahead: Give someone the strong shoulder
Written by Sierra Winter
You’ve seen it on the runway and now it’s in the stores. There’s no denying that the strong shoulder is a big trend for fall. I have to admit: I hated it at first. But now, after seeing some of my fabulous girlfriends pull it off, the trend has grown on me. This funky fashion-forward look is great for the office or a night out with friends. Try it in everything from a blazer to a dress to a blouse, or even a T-shirt! But you can’t just throw it on, you have to mind your body type, style it, and own the look. Here’s our two-part guide: First, how to get the look at three different price points. Then, how to style it.
The clothes:
Shoulder Pad Cowl Back Tunic, $55
This dress drapes in the back and hugs your hips. All you need to do is add a necklace, grab a clutch, throw on some heels, and you’re ready for a night out on the town!
Long sleeved Jayne Jersey Flare Top, $143.00
I love the way that this piece flares out at the bottom, adding a bit of femininity. It’s made out of super soft modal (95%) and stretchy spandex (5%), which makes for both a comfortable and flattering fit.
Robert Rodriguez Structured-Shoulder Blazer, $495
Yes, the price is high, but this is a more classic spin on the strong shoulder so you can wear this blazer season after season. And the ruffles give an old world renaissance feel to this modern trend.
The style tips:
For busty girls: If you’re not careful, the combo of a strong shoulder and a full bust can make for a top-heavy look. Try for a low-cut neckline — this will help create a better proportion. Balance a blazer or blouse with a full mini skirt. Try this Tiered Lace Skirt with Boy short (only $14.80!) to add a lacey feminine flair to a masculine style.
For not so busty girls: If you have a small bust, you can pull off just about any version of the look. Just remember to accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! Do a dark skinny jean and ankle bootie with funky fun jewelry. Have fun with it! I love this Flamenco Beaded Necklace ($8.80).
Whichever version you choose be sure you wear with confidence!

I am LOVIN' the strong shoulder look. Being a gal with small shoulders & not-so-small hips, it's perfect. I have to admit I still have an old pair of shoulder pads from the 80s that I've cut down to a reasonable size & I will occasionally stuff 'em into a sweater just to balance out my figure. Added bonus: the waist looks smaller. All you pear-shapes know what I'm talkin' about.

Uh Uh. Nope. No way. Busty gal. Broad shoulders (without the shoulder pads) and an athletic body. I look like a football player with a bust. Not going to happen. Made the mistake the first time this was popular (so I just dated myself). Not dumb enough to do it twice.

I seriously doubt that I will wear the "Big Shouldered" look. I mean, it's like, been there, done that! Fashion is so sadly derivative! Can't anyone come up with an original idea, instead of dragging out all of the "oldies"?
And, PLEASE, no more leggings! Those of us who lived through the 80's know that this is not a good look for anyone who weighs more than 100 pounds!
