Half-baked, all delicious
Written by Rachel Berman
I used to grab a scoop of trail mix from the bulk bins at my local health food store before hitting the movies or mall. The combo of nuts, seeds, cranberries, and mini chocolate chips helped keep me strong when I was tempted by the smell of buttery popcorn or freshly-baked pretzels. But recently, the store started posting nutrition facts next to their bulk food, which is both a blessing and a curse. Sometimes, even as a dietitian, I’d rather not know! As it turns out, my beloved trail mix is chock full of saturated fat. I guess it has a higher proportion of chocolate chips than I realized — or wanted to believe!
Enter Snacktrition’s Calcium and Fiber Fruit & Nut Mix, which initially caught my eye thanks to the title — who couldn’t use a little extra calcium or fiber in their snacks? The packaging is perfect for a gal on-the-go like me: a re-sealable, reusable container that I can throw in my bag without finding escaped nuts at the bottom later. As nice as all this is though, trail mix also has to taste good — and this one passes with flying colors. Instead of using chocolate chips for a touch of sweetness, Snacktrition mixed yogurt chips, which provide added calcium, with baked almonds and cashews, and dried cranberries and blueberries, so there’s vitamin C and antioxidants, too. No more bulk trail mix for me — I’ve found the perfect substitute sans the saturated fat! I predict this innovative product will be a best seller once word hits the street.
Tanya’s Tip: Not into trail mix? Try Snacktrition’s nuts, which they sprinkle with calcium or fiber, depending on the variety, and bake — a delicious idea, indeed.
