Light my fire

I love to travel and experience other cultures. But since I don’t have the time or money for a big trip right now, I’ve turned my attentions to something slightly smaller: lighting scented candles.

If this sounds silly to you, then you haven’t found the right candle! Let me suggest my new favorite: Altru candles, made by Gamillah Inc., a company founded by the very inspirational and cool Manuela Testolini. The line is inspired by cultures around the world and has a big sense of social responsibility: A portion of the proceeds goes to the non-profit In a Perfect World, which teaches children to become socially conscious leaders.

The different scents of the soy and beeswax candles, set in hammered copper holders, represent various cultures. My favorite is the Moroccan-inspired Artistry, a Masala Chai scent with hints of rich, warm spices. Each of the seven scents is available in candle, incense, or home fragrance form.

When I light my candle to avoid the hustle and bustle of everyday life, I feel like royalty — even if I’m just working in my apartment. It’s the perfect escape, plane ticket not required.
