Hungry? Pucker up!
Written by Amelia Mularz
Imagine a lip gloss that not only adds shimmer to your pout, but also keeps you from snacking. That’s crazy talk, right? Well, before you begin picturing grown women chomping on their Bonne Bell, check out Purple Lab’s new product: Huge Lips, Skinny Hips. This intriguing new lip gloss purports to do the impossible — keep your cravings at bay while plumping and adding subtle color. The secret ingredient? Hoodia, a natural appetite suppressant that, similar to glucose, fools the brain into thinking you’re full. After my initial say what??? reaction, I settled into a too-good-to-be-true rationalization (the thought process I usually reserve for late-night infomercials). I knew I had to take this plumper for a test drive. Surprisingly, my first day wearing it, I did steer clear of my ritual afternoon mocha. But I’m not quite sure if that was the Hoodia taking over or just the fact that I didn’t want to smudge my radiantly rouged smile. Of course, I asked our SkinnyandtheCity.com dietitians about Hoodia, especially since it’s not regulated by the FDA. The bottom line? They say it’s safe (especially in a lip gloss), but the efficacy is questionable.
Even if the technology is nothing more than the stuff of science fiction, I’ve got to hand it to Purple Lab; they know how to pick their colors. I went straight for red (hey, I don’t mess around) and absolutely loved it. There are five other colors, ranging from pink to peach to purple and even clear, all with cute names, and all packed with Hoodia. Even if I don’t stop craving that afternoon snack, at least I’ve got a new great lip gloss!

I'm always concerned how these little additives (especially diet supplements) are going to mess with my medications, just like a tiny bit of St. John's Wart could make your birth control ineffective. I know it is only a tiny amount, but through the day it could add up. Is there a concern here?

Thanks for asking Michelle!
Not enough research has been performed with hoodia to determine interaction with meds. The San Bushmen of the Kalahari desert (who have been using it for thousands of years) obviously weren't taking any modern medication so there is no evidence on that front.
As a general precaution, if you are pregnant or nursing, have kidney or liver disease, you should avoid hoodia in all forms. Otherwise (especially in lip gloss form which you are not ingesting in significant amounts) it is probably okay.

This product sounds amazing and I would love to try it. Is there any side effects from Hoodia? Does it add calories to the lip gloss?

I'm not sure about this. I have heard in the past that a lot of diet pill products that claim to be made with hoodia have a very small amount. I am thinking that it might be the case with this lip gloss. This might be a way for the company to add just enough that they can advertise that it has hoodia, and still charge more for the product. I am a lip gloss freak as well, and I always say, even it is a placebo effect, if you're gonna snack less, then why not try it?!

Sounds very cool. I have allergies and usually have to wear only those products on the market that I know won't dry my lips out. Anyone experience dry lips with this hoodia loaded product. Chapstick plain and simple is okay for me. I'm okay with the flavored varieties too. I like the brand of this interesting new product as I usually could tolerate their products in the past.

What exactly is hoodia? Would you be absorbing as much through the lipgloss and if you were injesting it, say by supplement or however you normally ingest it?

It's a great idea! I would want to know how often it has to be applied and can you "OD" How much is too much or is that a legitimate concern?

I believe all the comments posted are pretty much questions I would ask also. I am sure there are rules to this product. I love lip gloss a lot and if this product is affordable I could try it out.

Sounds great but...my lips are just fine the way they are - please consider making this without the plumper for those of us who don't need or want it!!!

Hi all,
Thank you for your comments. I'm sorry it took me a while to reply. I was in CA and the computer crashed. It took a few days to get it rebuilt and I was out of commission!
Anyway, I want to get back to your questions.
This gloss, first of all, is meant to be a reminder of being conscious and mindful of what and how you eat. And I believe appetite lives, at the end of the day, between the ears, not anywhere else. I mean, how many times have you continued eating after you were full or how many times were you full and found yourself double fisting cupcakes (I am guilty of both). When I wear this gloss, it switches my intention, like tying a string around your finger to rememeber to do something.
There is not a lot of Hoodia. It is completely safe. I lick my lips when I'm craving something when I'm not hungry and it always helps me. But that is because of what it does psychologically! Hoodia is a plant extract that has been used for centuries in South Africa as an appetite suppressant. And this is NOT a weight loss tool - it is a fun and sexy way to add some oomph to your beauty routine and your life. Read: fun! We're not changing the world - but adding glamour, sex appeal, a delicious pout that offers two things at once.
It is also delicious so I tell myself it cures my sweet cravings. Plus, there is orange extract. Orange is a natural metabolism kicker too!
As for plumping - you don't know me but I have really full lips naturally. I don't actually need a plumper but always appreciate a drop of extra juice. What I've seen is that it plumps as much as it needs to for the most part. And the reason it plumps and has hoodia is because Purple Lab is about "double duty beauty," always doing two things at once.
Not every product is for every single woman. So if this is for you, join our Purple party. If not, it's okay - we still want you to feel beautiful anyway!
Mwah!
