The Skinny on Fashion Week 2009
Skinny Q&A: Talking high fashion with Project Runway alum Daniel Vosovic
As fashion week continues in New York, we don’t want to miss a single strut down the runway. We checked in with one of our favorite designers, Project Runway alum Daniel Vosovic, to get the Skinny on all things Fashion Week. From celeb sightings to fur capelets, find out what excites the fresh-faced designer about this season’s shows.
Q: Can you walk us through a day at Bryant Park during fashion week?
A: It really is as exciting as you’d think! From walking up to the tents, to wading through a sea of fashionistas in order to find your seat, to your first Anna Wintour sighting — it’s all great! My favorite part is walking up to the tents when you can see all of these fans teetering around in sky high heels and draped in the latest fashion, all in one city block. After you make your way into the main lobby, it’s a matter of pushing your way through the line and past those whose names “must’ve been misspelled.” Once in, you find your seat and people watch: magazine editors, stylists and their celeb clients, well-known socialites, and lots of people who aren’t nearly as important as they think they are — there’s so much ego in fashion it’s insane!
Q: What’s the day like when it’s your show?
A: So far, I’ve only had the pleasure of showing once at the tents, but the only word to describe it is surreal. There are so many people moving around trying to get things done, others not moving fast enough, and then you’re in the middle of it all trying to answer questions smoothly and keep everyone motivated and happy. Afterwards, you feel like you were just in the middle of a big, fabulous fashion tornado.
Q: What shows are you most excited to see this year?
A: I’m excited to see many of the shows this year, particularly due to the economic concerns our world is facing. Fashion can be a frivolous thing and it can be difficult to get people excited to go out there and shop again. I understand that fashion should reflect the times, but as a consumer, if I’m feeling broke as a joke, I’d rather spend my money on something that looks designer, something unexpected and meaningful. I don’t want more basics.
Q: How do you dress for a fashion show? Do you have to wear the designer?
A: You don’t have to wear the designer to their show; that “rule” is primarily observed by the celeb invitees and editors who have time to change in-between shows. For the rest of us, more is more! Fashion should be fun. Where else can you see someone wearing a cropped fur capelet, patent platform wedges, satin pants, and a fedora? And that’s just the men.
Here’s to a stylish week — and year!

Confessions of a Dietitian
This weekend Confessions of a Shopaholic premiered in movie theaters all over the country. Not all of the Skinny girls are shopaholics, but we all can appreciate the high after a solid purchase. But although we may not be addicted to shopping like Rebecca Bloomwood, we have our weaknesses too. We thought we'd take this opportunity to show you that we are not healthy eating, nutrition information dispensing robots. Being registered dietitians does not prevent us from being human. Many of us got into this field because we love food, so of course, we indulge in what we love just like Rebecca shops. The key is to do it in moderation so your appreciation for that indulgence is heightened ten-fold.All this week on the web, look for our confessions A.K.A. our weaknesses when it comes to our expertise. We hope this will inspire you to realize that it is possible to live your life to the fullest while maintaining your healthy figure and overall wellness. Please share your stories, addictions, food downfalls, and fashion faux pas so we can help you through them. That's what we're here for after all!

And the winner of the Obsessed with Pistachio contest is....
Thank you all for your creative and interesting entries to our pistachio contest! We enjoyed reading them all but the winner was Claudia from NYC who told us best why she is obsessed with pistachios:
"I love pistachios because it reminds me of my childhood when my dad used to give my cousins and I trivia questions and give us pistachios for all the questions we answered correctly. its funny, cause i always thought everyone's family gave pistachios as prizes too. I remember going to my friends house and expecting to get pistachios as a prize and her whole family laughing when i told them about what my family did."
Claudia has won 5 cases of this wonder nut so she can host as much trivia as she'd like. :)
If you entered and were not chosen, do not let this stop you from trying again. We have a contest about once a week and who knows -- You could be our next Skinny winner!
Eat Well, Spend Less
Monday, February 2nd, might be the official Groundhog's Day, but with the media constantly reminding you of the current plight of our economy, you might be thinking you're living in the movie "Groundhog's Day." Every morning, you turn on the news and hear about all the depressing economic numbers, and job losses that everyday people like you, our readers, are experiencing.
With all of this bad news, it's natural that many of us will cut back costs in all areas of our budget, and consequently many experts are now concerned that people will start to favor cheaper options of foods that are generally associated with higher calories and saturated fats. Aside from the cost factor, there are the ole' reliable "comfort foods" that we tend to gravitate towards in tough times, which also are generally not the healthiest food options out there.
While we certainly can't fix all the ills of our economy, we at Skinny and the City feel strongly that you might need us more than ever to help you through these difficult times. Enter our Eat Well, Spend Less articles, exclusively on the website. We are dedicating this week to demonstrating how you can remain healthy and maintain your glow without burning a hole in your pocket.
