The British are coming!
Written by Amelia Mularz
A quick primer on British fashion: They call tanks “vests,” sweaters “jumpers,” and garter belts “suspenders” (confusion over that one is potentially dangerous!). Then there’s the most important term: Topshop, as in the U.K.’s go-to spot for trendy yet affordable looks. Learn that one now, since the clothing mega-store finally crossed the Atlantic to open its first U.S. location in New York City last week. Don’t live in the Big Apple? You can still enjoy a taste of London. Check out some of my favorite spring-fashion favorites from topshop.com — and order now; they’re offering free shipping ‘til April 9:
London Fog: Pac-A-Parka Coat, $50
London isn’t exactly known for its sunshine, so Brits know to be prepared. With its bright hues and sleek belt, this waterproof parka isn’t just stylish, it’s also incredibly functional. Fold it up and stash it in your handbag in case you encounter a surprise afternoon shower.
English Garden: Yellow Rose Sweetheart Tunic, $70
Nothing says “I’m ready for spring” like garden-inspired garb. Pair it with a fitted jacket, dark denim, and heels for a pulled-together look. Or wear it with leggings and sandals for a weekend trip to the farmers market.
Afternoon Tee: Le Vieux Paris Tee, $40
An ode to another European fashion hot spot, this is the perfect top for stylish, yet comfy daytime wear. If you’re shopping for basics, check out Topshop’s Tee Shop for plain tees and tanks in just about every color.
Rolling Stones: Engraved Stone Ring, $20
Don’t forget to accessorize! Topshop is fully stocked with jewelry, shoes, handbags, hair accessories, even umbrellas. I love any bauble that makes a statement all on its own, like this oversized cocktail ring. From the gold to the crystal rhinestones, nothing about this piece is understated — unlike the English themselves.
Mind the Gap: Stripe Cut Out Swimsuit, $55
Not your mother’s one-piece! The cut-outs keep this suit young and playful, and yet at $55, your mom would totally approve. Throw on some red shades to contrast the black and white stripes and head straight to the pool — or “swimming bath” as the Brits might say.
Cheers!
