We've got the buzz
Written by Barbie Broschart
Here’s my tip of the day: Drink coffee! I’m sure you’ve got plenty of energy with the holiday weekend coming up, but a nice buzz isn’t the only benefit you’ll get from the nutty beverage. Folgers had it right — it is the best part of waking up. Recent research indicates that coffee — both regular and decaf — may reduce the risk of stroke, several types of cancer (including liver, skin, colorectal, breast, oral, pharyngeal and esophageal), and cardiovascular disease. Researchers suspect it’s due to its high antioxidant content. Add that to earlier research that shows drinking three cups of caffeinated coffee a day may boost brain function, and you’ve got plenty of reasons to sip some joe.
Before you go out and down a few pots, though, a word on quantity: Most adults and pregnant women should limit their coffee intake to no more than 300 mg of caffeine a day, which is about 2-to-3 8-ounce cups, depending on the kind. Stick to that amount, and you won’t have any of the caffeine side effects you’ve read about. And don’t forget, to reap the latest benefits, you can also drink decaf.

My favorite coffee right now is ICED!!! I make my own to control the calories. I brew a pot and freeze half of it into ice cubes. When I want an icy drink, I pop the coffee cubes in the blender with soy milk, cold coffee, a packet of Splenda, blend and go! Or just pour cold coffee over the cubes and soy milk. Sometimes I add a sprinkle of cocoa, cinnamon or nutmeg to taste.

I love coffee because it gives me energy and wakes me up in the morning. I love flavored coffee like vanilla or hazelnut, because they are a little sweet but not loaded with calories.

Green Mountain Pumpkin Spice coffee is the best! I always buy extra and put it in the freezer so it lasts long after the Holidays.

I couldn't get through my morning without Peet's 101 Blend or my afternoon without Peet's mocha-java water-processed decaf! When the flavor is as smooth, strong, nutty, and carmel-y like it is in these coffees I don't even feel the need for milk, although as a special treat I'll sometimes add some sugar-free vanilla syrup and a splash of skim milk.

I can't function without (at least) my morning cup of coffee. My friends and family always yell at me for being addicted and constantly nudge me to wean myself off of it. Thanks for giving me tons of info and ammunition for the next time they tell me coffee is unhealthy!

Smooth, rich, I drink it black. No super dark roasts or espresso. Just good strong coffee. Love Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Gevalia to name a few. Coffee is my one bad habit . I drink a lot, not for the buzz, I just love the taste.

For many years I drank Folger's decaf until I was able to find 8 O'clock
coffee where I live. I grew up enjoying the taste of 8 O'clock coffee and am glad to have found it again. If I could drink caffeinated coffee, I would definitely choose the Colombian blend in the 8 O'clock brand. Another great coffee is Dunkin Donuts brand but it isn't available in decaf where I live. I've loved the taste of coffee since I was a little girl when I used to pour it over a biscuit and add a teaspoon of sugar on top of the biscuit--yum yum!!

Just a question. Who did the research, sponsored by whom, when and how many people were involved in the study. It sounds very biased in favor of coffee companies.

this is fantastic for me. i actually work at a dunkin donuts about 5 or 6 mornings a week. i get all the unlimited coffee i want. i try to stick with skim milk and go easy on the cream. i have a box of truvia packets at home, and i take a few with me every day, so i don't have to use sugar or chemical sweeteners. i start the morning off with a hot mocha/caramel turbo (meaning a shot of espresso) coffee, then switch to iced hazelnut decaf until the end of my shift, when i take home a large iced version of the mocha/caramel. sometimes, when i'm craving the sugar, i'll allow myself a mocha coffee coolatta. for those watching sugar, but liked flavored coffees, all flavor shots at DD are sugar free extracts!!! so enjoy all the flavored coffee your heart desires!

Hi Arlene,
As registered dietitians, we know it is imperative not to post information without basing it on credible, peer-reviewed research. The article in our newsletter refers to many studies on this topic, the most recent of which was published in Circulation (a database owned by the American Heart Association). “Coffee Consumption and Risk of Stroke in Women” was performed over a period of 24 years with a sample size of 83,076 women. The conclusion stated, “long-term coffee consumption was not associated with an increased risk of stroke in women. In contrast, our data suggest that coffee consumption may modestly reduce risk of stroke.” This article was published on February 16th, 2009.
Other journals researched included: Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA), Vascular Health Risk Management, International Journal of Cancer, Journal of National Cancer Institute, and the American Dietetic Associations' newsletter - ADA Times.

We just arrived home from vacation in San Diego. There is a small kiosk called Cappucino Cottage that has the BEST coffee I have ever tasted. Luckily, I do not live near there or I would become addicted to the Carmel Mocciata!
